Scale prevention

Tankless water heater scale prevention in Utah: softeners, cartridges and X3

Flush My Tankless books tankless flushing and scale prevention across Lehi, Utah County and the southern Salt Lake Valley. If scale keeps coming back in your heater, a local tankless technician can flush it and talk through softeners and scale-prevention systems. This page compares the options, using manufacturer documents and published water data.

Scale prevention means treating water before it reaches the heater, so less scale forms in the heat exchanger. The main options are a whole-home water softener, an inline scale-prevention cartridge such as Navien PeakFlow or Rinnai Scale Control, or a heater with scale protection built in, such as A.O. Smith and Takagi X3 models. Prevention slows scale down. It doesn’t always remove the need for a flush, so check what your heater’s manual says.

Utah water against each brand’s hardness limit

Every manufacturer sets a maximum hardness for the water going into its heater. They fall into three groups:

  • Takagi and A.O. Smith: Takagi’s manual says 7 gpg for single-family homes, and 4 gpg for other uses. The A.O. Smith-hosted manual also says 7 gpg.
  • Bosch: a maximum of 100 ppm.
  • Navien, Noritz, Rinnai and Rheem: Navien and Noritz say 12 gpg. Rinnai and Rheem list 200 ppm, the same level written in a different unit.

Here’s how published Utah water compares with the two most common limits:

Water supply Published hardness Above Takagi and A.O. Smith’s 7 gpg? Above Navien and Noritz’s 12 gpg?
American Fork (city’s softener setting) 12.38 gpg Yes Yes, slightly
Saratoga Springs 8.3 gpg average Yes No
Highland 14 gpg Yes Yes
Orem 7–25 gpg Mostly At the upper end
Provo 10–15 gpg Yes At the upper end
Spanish Fork 13.4–20.24 gpg Yes Yes
South Jordan 7–10 gpg At or above No
Herriman local wells 25–60 gpg Yes Yes
JVWCD average, which serves Riverton about 10.7 gpg Yes No

Bosch’s limit is lower again. Every figure in the table is above it.

District water needs a note. Herriman says the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District water it buys measures 12–15 gpg, while JVWCD’s own site puts the range at 1–12 gpg. Both are reported as each source states them. The Utah hard water guide explains the hardness scale and the full city list.

What the manufacturers ask for

Several manuals go beyond a number and say what to do about it:

  • Navien: water above 12 gpg requires a softener or PeakFlow.
  • Rinnai: in hard-water areas, the water must be treated and may require a more frequent flushing schedule.
  • Rheem: the RTGH manual says to flush the heat exchanger regularly and to add a water treatment device or softener when water is outside its specified levels.
  • Bosch: a softener is strongly recommended above 140 F outlet temperature, because higher set temperatures raise the scale risk.
  • Takagi: its FAQ recommends a softener or anti-scale system in hard-water areas.

The warranty side matters too. Noritz says hardness above 12 grains per gallon voids coverage for resulting damage. The warranty and scale guide lists each brand’s exclusion.

Water softeners

A softener swaps the calcium and magnesium in your water for sodium or potassium as it passes through a tank of resin beads. The minerals that form scale are taken out before water reaches the heater, the taps or the dishwasher. The softener needs salt refills and its own upkeep.

HomeGuide says a water softener costs $1,200–$3,800 with installation, with a national average of $2,500.

What the Battelle study found

The best-known data on softeners and tankless heaters comes from a Battelle lab study for the Water Quality Association, reported by Contractor Magazine. The test water was 26 gpg, which is harder than most Utah city water but inside the range of Herriman’s local wells.

  • On unsoftened water, gas tankless heaters dropped from 80% to 72% efficiency.
  • They had to be delimed after 1.6 years of equivalent field service.
  • After deliming, they recovered to about 77%, short of where they started.
  • On softened water, Battelle reported efficiency remaining constant over the life of the unit.

It was an accelerated lab test, so real homes won’t match the timeline exactly. The direction is clear, though. Scale costs efficiency, and descaling doesn’t win all of it back.

Salt-free conditioners

Salt-free systems don’t remove hardness minerals. They aim to change how the minerals behave so less scale sticks. HomeGuide prices them at $1,500–$4,500 installed, and says they’re less effective in homes with extremely hard water. Several manuals above ask for a softener or the brand’s own scale-prevention product by name. If you’re considering a salt-free unit, ask the technician whether your heater’s manufacturer accepts it.

Scale-prevention cartridges

These are small inline units fitted on the cold-water line just before the heater. They treat only the water going into the heater, not the whole house.

  • Navien PeakFlow. Navien’s manual names it as an alternative to a softener above its hardness limit. Navien also gives one additional year of labor warranty when a new heater is installed with PeakFlow A or PeakFlow C.
  • Rinnai Scale Control System. Rinnai says most homes will replace its cartridge every 10 to 12 months.
  • Rheem. On RTGH heaters, code 88 is a reminder to flush the heat exchanger and/or replace the water treatment filter, so the heater can prompt both jobs together.

Cartridges protect only the heater, and they need regular replacement. That fits naturally into annual tankless maintenance.

Heaters with built-in scale protection

A.O. Smith makes two claims for its X3 condensing heaters:

  • Maintenance: the technology eliminates routine descaling (X3 models).
  • Warranty: no exclusions for scale-related failures (X3 models).

Takagi’s X3 warranty provides 15 years of heat exchanger coverage including scale failure. If you’re replacing a heater in a hard-water city, it’s worth comparing an X3 model with a standard heater plus a cartridge. The installation page covers replacement costs.

Comparing the options

Option What it treats Cost or upkeep (where sourced) Flushing afterward
Water softener Whole house $1,200–$3,800 installed (HomeGuide), plus salt Still per your manual; scale builds much more slowly
Salt-free conditioner Whole house $1,500–$4,500 installed (HomeGuide) Still needed; less effective in extremely hard water
Navien PeakFlow Heater only price not in our sources Per Navien’s manual and reminder
Rinnai Scale Control Heater only cartridge every 10 to 12 months Per Rinnai’s manual and SS reminder
X3 heater (A.O. Smith, Takagi) Built in part of the heater price A.O. Smith says routine descaling isn’t needed

Keep the temperature sensible

Rinnai says scale is accelerated by high temperature settings. Every degree you don’t need adds to the problem, so set the heater only as hot as your household uses. Pair that with treatment and a regular flush and descale, and the heat exchanger stays clean far longer. When you’re ready, call to book a flush and the technician can check your water and your heater.

Common questions

Do I need a water softener for a tankless water heater in Utah?

It depends on your water and your heater. Navien's manual says water above 12 gpg requires a softener or PeakFlow, and Takagi's manual caps hardness at 7 gpg for single-family homes. Many Utah city water figures are above one or both limits, so some form of treatment is often needed to stay inside the manual.

Do I still need to flush my tankless if I have a softener?

Usually yes, but less often. A softener slows scale a great deal. In the Battelle study, softened heaters showed efficiency remaining constant over the life of the unit. Your manual and the heater's reminder set the schedule, and a technician can adjust it for softened water.

How often do I change a Rinnai Scale Control cartridge?

Rinnai says most homes need a new cartridge every 10 to 12 months, depending on cartridge size and water use.

Does Navien PeakFlow affect my warranty?

Navien gives one additional year of labor warranty when a new Navien tankless heater is installed with a PeakFlow A or PeakFlow C system. Navien's manual also names PeakFlow as an alternative to a softener for water above its hardness limit.

Do salt-free water conditioners work for tankless heaters?

HomeGuide says salt-free conditioners cost $1,500–$4,500 installed and are less effective in homes with extremely hard water. Check whether your heater's manufacturer accepts one before relying on it.
